The Opportunity - Hands-on Learning without Hands-off Equipment
The centrepiece of the Science Centre, the Super Lab, is designed to accommodate a wide range of science programmes, from basic physics to molecular biology, and fuses traditional hands-on teaching methods with digital interactive learning. "Forty-five per cent of potential science majors desire better equipment, facilities and more technology in the learning environment," said Brian Juicer, project head of a study commissioned by London Met University.

The Super Lab houses 280 individual workstations, equipped with full computer and video facilities. Students can develop their scientific skills through interaction with teaching materials delivered via laboratory sessions. Professors teach classes that are digitally recorded and streamed wirelessly to radio headsets. Lessons can be stored and retrieved for future classes. Students watch lecturers through video feeds and should they have questions or emergencies, can push a button to call for help from academics roaming the floors.

The Solution - Displays are a Critical Part of the System
AG Neovo X-Series displays are the main and often sole visual point of contact for students. As Michael Fursten, the project's director of system integration, recalls, "Because in most cases lessons would be taught entirely through computers, the display was a critical part of the system. Each student would potentially be watching a different lesson, so we needed it to be close by and accessible; it couldn't be hanging out of sight in the ceiling corner. It also had to be protected from any accidents, but not buried inside a desk or under a bulky frame." The Super Lab installed 280 AG Neovo X-20 displays. According to the director of system integration, "We looked at many different monitors, and while some seem fit our needs, the X-Series won us over with its hard glass protection and the strong metal frame. Performance-wise, the AG Neovo was comparable to most of the top displays. But, the X-Series displays had a sleeker, more contemporary look and it was more than durable enough to handle anything we imagined students would throw at it."

In particular, Mr. Fursten praised the NeoV™ Optical Glass, which protects the LCD panels from scratches, accidents, and incidental damage from dirt, liquids, or fingerprints.

"The NeoV™ Optical Glass made our decision easy. It performs better than other screen protection solutions and gives the displays a very nice, high-end look."

The Result - Studying Science is Now Officially Cool
To stop the decline in the number of students studying science, the Super Lab proved that to make science an attractive study option, the university needs to make the study environment attractive in the first place. The Science Centre and Super Lab with AG Neovo displays have met with resounding success, not only attracting new students, but reinvigorating current students and gathering many accolades. "It's amazing compared with what we had before," says Victoria Eames, 24, a biochemistry undergraduate. "I believe that these facilities will encourage people to study science because there's more potential to learn and to do more and better experiments."

"The Super Lab was incredible. I am definitely applying to London Met to study forensics," said one student. "This place is cool. I hadn't thought about studying sports science here but it's local and has great facilities so it makes sense," enthused another.

Vice-Chancellor Roper has also been extremely pleased: "Our commitment to science has already paid off. Our student numbers have grown, bucking the national trend, and our research efforts are starting to bear fruit. Our academics now have the best equipment and the most interactive science learning environment in the world."
