The Solution - The Display that's Built to Stay Work on the new Pleiades, based on a new design by navel architect Ian Paton that focuses on maximising efficiency, began on May 2008 at Parkol Shipyards. Over 34 weeks, the ship slowly took shape. The ship's steel, double chine hull maximises cargo space while providing more stability. A transom stern allows a larger deck for working and a bulbous bow reduces drag to increase speed, range, fuel efficiency and seakeeping. For the wheelhouse electronics system, the Hepburns looked to McMinn Marine, a business owned and operated by two brothers who have combined over 25 years of experience. For McMinn, installing the latest and best in fish detection, navigation, monitoring and communication systems was not enough. To ensure the new systems would look as well as they performed, they turned to AG Neovo SX-Series displays. In the wheelhouse, the sensitive main electronics could be housed and protected, but the displays had to be in clear view. This meant exposure to harsh elements, wet raincoats, accidents and more. The McMinn brothers found the perfect solution the AG Neovo SX-Series displays featuring durable metal casing and protective NeoV™ Optical Glass, "The robust build [of the SX-Series] makes them perfect for the job," says owner Kevin McMinn. "The lifespans of other monitors on the market are drastically shortened by the cold, harsh and damp conditions. This does not seem to affect the glass-fronted SX-Series. We have used many competing brand-name glass-fronted monitors, but found a large percentage to fail." Additionally, the slim design and flush-mount capability were perfect for the space-conscious wheelhouse. The award-winning design made installation was easier, especially in comparison to bulky CRT displays, and helped turn an ordinary wheelhouse into a high-tech command centre. According to McMinn, "The Pleiades is one of the few, if not the only vessel in the Scottish fishing fleet to have 10 flat screens in the wheelhouse. Other boats have monitors which are mixed and matched depending on what type of gear is installed. With the Pleiades we wanted a modern look, and to keep all the displays the same. A bit more expensive but definitely worthwhile for the aesthetics of the wheelhouse.... no other display looks as good." The Result - On the Fishing Frontier The Pleiades was finally completed on January 10th, 2009 and a few days later got its first taste of life at sea. With a strong, bold colours, a professional look and the capabilities to back it up, the Pleiades truly is a paradigm of today's modern fishing vessels. The Hepburn brothers were immensely satisfied with their new vessel, and equally so with the wheelhouse. "I have to give credit to David [McMinn] for introducing AG Neovo to us," says Philip Hepburn. "He said they were the best displays available and I have to say, after using them, we agree." In fact, the Hepburn brothers are so happy with the installation, that through their recommendations McMinn secured another contract for one of the biggest prawn trawlers to be built for Scotland since 2001! Much remains to be planned, but this they already know: it will have 10 x19" screens and 2 x 17" screens—all from AG Neovo. The wide 160º viewing angle of the SX-Series makes every seat is the best seat in the wheelhouse. Page Previous / 1 / 2 |
