At a Glance - Watching Over the Waters of the Atlantic Formally founded in 1926, the Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG) traces its beginnings back to 1859 when a lone ship bravely patrolled the waters of Iceland. Today, that spirit continues. Although a small nation, the ICG is responsible for patrolling 758,000 square kilometres of ocean territory. Currently the ICG operates two offshore patrol vessels as well as a 64-ton hydrographic boat. The ICG's main duties involve monitoring fisheries in the ocean, defense against international terrorism, search and rescue operations, as well as pollution control. The National Rescue Center and boats are outfitted with all the latest technology intergrated with tough AG Neovo displays. The Environment - Toughest Seas in the World The Icelandic Coast Guard is responsible for patrol and rescue operations in one of the toughest marine areas in the world: the North Atlantic Ocean. For the greater part of the year, there are heavy storms as well as dangerous ice floes during the winter. Iceland's fishing zone is as large an area as France and West Germany combined, so it is easy to imagine the problems involved in mounting winter searches for missing ships or aircraft. The Opportunity - Durability and Reliability Required The ICG has recently undergone considerable changes and renewals. New headquarters, which are now located in a newly expanded building within the National Rescue Centre at Skógarhlíð. A new ship and a new aircraft are also on the horizon. In 2004, the ICG, still using CRT monitors, looked to upgrade to a more modern and effective solution. In addition to saving space, the ICG needed a versatile display that could be used for camera monitoring as well as sonar and radar devices. The monitors would be installed in their new headquarters as well as onboard the two offshore vessels and the hydrographic boat, so the durability and reliability also had to be well documented. The Solution - Perfect Performance in Less-than-Perfect Weather The ICG chose and installed over a dozen 19" X-Series displays on the two offshore boats. The high quality build of the X-Series displays proved useful against the sub-zero temperatures of the Atlantic and the extremely high relative humidity. The high quality, high resolution screens also enabled monitoring, sonar and radar images to be easily viewed in often less-than-perfect weather conditions. Most importantly, however, was the durable metal casing and NeoV™ Optical Glass available on all the X-Series displays. In an extreme environment with emergency operations occurring nearly every other day, the ICG need the strongest, most reputable protection for their onboard displays, and found them in the AG Neovo X-Series. The Result - Seamless Integration According to Valdimar Jónsson, Sales Manager at Hugvar, suppliers of AG Neovo to the Coast Guard, "X-Series displays have proved to be an excellent solution for the ICG. Not only have the displays worked seamlessly with the vessel's systems, they have lived up to AG Neovo's reputation as a provider of professional and reliable products." Today ICG is gradually replacing other CRT monitors with AG Neovo displays, including extensive installation of the X-Series in their sentry points. |
